Homework – Week 4

For your homework this week you need to create a poster of a food web for a chosen habitat.

You could choose savannah, rainforest, desert, arctic, pond, river ext. Think carefully and do some research on the types of animals that live your chosen habitat. make sure you poster is colourful and shows the “interconnectedness of all things” (Dirk Gently).

This is an example of an excellent food web for the savannah eco-system.

Beowulf – A 5W Production

Recently we have been looking at Beowulf in literacy. Our work culminated in us working in groups to re-tell a section of the story using drama. Here is the short video that we made.

Beowulf, composed between in the 7th and 10th centuries, is generally thought to be the oldest surviving epic in British literature. It is about the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel’s mother. Beowulf then returns to his own country and dies in old age in a heroic battle against a dragon.

What do you think we did well? And Why?

Issue of the Week – Nelson Mandela

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Nelson Mandela

As we all found out of Friday, Nelson Mandela has sadly passed away. He has led an amazing life, and his values and achievements are an inspiration to millions of people all over the world. I want to learn more about him, and I am sure that all of your contributions on our issue of the week board can help….

Here are some questions to get you thinking?

  • What did Nelson Mandela believe in?
  • What was the Apartheid?
  • Do you think he has helped to make the world a better place? Why?
  • Why does he inspire so many people?
  • Did he have an easy life

Issue of the Week – Deforestation

Deforestation is the clearing of the Earth’s forests on a massive scale. This often results in damage to the quality of the land. Forests still cover about 30% of the world’s land area, but on average 36 football fields are cleared of forest each minute!! Here are some pictures and a graph to get you thinking:

Questions to think about:

  1. Why are forests important?
  2. Why do people cut down forests?
  3. Where in the world is this happening the most?
  4. Why do many people think we need to stop deforestation now?

I look forward to pinning up all of your contributions. Great effort last week – much better from the boys!!

Issue of the Week – Climate Change

Climate change is an issue that is affecting our entire globe. Scientists believe that certain human activities are releasing gases like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and these are causing the earth to become warmer. They also believe that the effects of this global warming are changing the world’s weather patterns in ways that are putting people’s lives and livelihoods in danger.

Here are some pictures and a short video clip to get you thinking:

It is a very important issue that we all need to think about. Here are some questions that will help:

1) What is climate change?

2) Why is our climate changing?

3) What do people mean when they talk about global warming?

4) What type of human activities release gases like carbon dioxide?

5) How might climate change affect people’s lives?

6) Can climate change affect us in England?

7) Where in the world is climate change having the biggest impact on people’s lives?

8) What can we do to help slow down climate change?

I look forward to pinning up lots of contributions during the week. This is what we managed last week, mainly thanks to the girls, and I am sure we can do better this week. Come on boys…

Issue of the Week: Typhoon Haiyan

Our new ‘issue of the week’ is Typhoon Haiyan. The typhoon struck the Philippines on Friday 8th November, and has caused lots and lots of damage.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Here are some questions that we could be thinking about:

  1. What are typhoons and how are they caused?
  2.  Where do they happen?
  3.  Do they have any other names?
  4.  What kinds of damage to they cause?
  5. Why has Typhoon Haiyan caused so much damage in the Philippines?

I look forward to pinning up lots of contributions on our ‘issue of the week’ board during the week.

Story Telling Week Update

This week has been our story telling week, and in 5W we have been looking at ‘Voices in the Park’ by Anthony Browne.

Image

It has been a great opportunity to look at a story in real detail. The book is about a walk in the park told from the perspectives of four different voices: an aloof, middle-class mother, her lonely son, an unemployed man and his friendly daughter. Our activities have allowed us to put ourselves in the shoes of the ‘voices’, and think carefully about their individual character traits. Here are some of the ways in which we have done this:

Creating huge models of them….

Displaying their thoughts and dreams…

Image

Acting out their parts…

Creating and playing a board game about them…

Our learning has not just been limited to ‘Voices in the Park’. Most of our activities have required us to work as part of a group, so our teamwork skills have improved as the week as gone on. It has been lovely to see us all sharing ideas and helping each other out.

I look forward to seeing all of our fancy dress tomorrow, and I hope that many parents/carers will be able to join us in the afternoon to hear our very own stories.

I would love to hear what you all thought about the week… what was your favourite part and why? Comments please…

Our new ‘Issue of the Week’ board

Our ‘Issue of the Week’ board is a new and exciting way for us to share ideas about important things going on in the world around us.

Every week I will select a new ‘issue’ for us to think about. In our classroom we have a dedicated display board for our ‘Issue of the Week’, and the aim is to get as many of us as possible to express ideas and opinions about the issue of the week through photos, drawings, stories, poems and any other appropriate contributions. These will all be pinned up on the ‘Issue of the Week’ board.

Our first issue of the week is Remembrance Day.

I look forward to pinning lots of contributions up during the week.

Our Severed Finger Sandwiches

To kick off our literacy work on instructional writing, and because it was Halloween, we made ‘severed finger sandwiches’. This was the recipe that we followed:

  1. Firstly, take 2 slices of bread and lay them out in front of you.
  2. Next, using a spoon, take 1 spoonful of jam and put it on one of the slices.
  3. Now, using the back of the spoon spread the jam out evenly over the slice.
  4. Repeat steps two and three for the other slice of bread so both are equally jammy.
  5. Then, take your sponge fingers and lay them horizontally on one of the slices. Make sure the fingers are evenly spaced out on the slice of bread.
  6. Next, take your second slice of bread and place it jam side down on top of the sponge fingers and press down so that the jam oozes out of the sides like blood!
  7. Finally, take a knife and cut your sandwich vertically down the middle, through the sponge fingers.

Here are some pictures of us in action:

If you were to open a sandwich shop, would you sell severed finger sandwiches in you shop? If ‘yes’ why, and if ‘no’ why not? Please comment…
